「岐阜渋うちわ」の創業は寛文8年（1664年）。その昔は、料理を作る時の火おこしとして利用されていました。
うちわには、納涼をきかせる「水うちわ」と、粋なアクセサリーとして親しまれた「漆うちわ」があります。
「岐阜渋うちわ」を見ると、その昔うちわ片手に川べりで涼む若人たちの姿が目に浮かぶようです。
昔ながらの制作工程は手づくりの作業が多く、現在では、「渋うちわ」を制作できるのは、住井冨次郎商店の住井さんだけとなりました。
住井さんは今後も後継者の育成に力を注ぎ、「岐阜渋うちわ」の伝統を守っていきたいと話しています。

The history of Gifu Lacquered Fan productions began in 1664 and the fans had been used for starting fire in the kitchen. Today, there are two variations of the product. The unique Water Fans are dipped into water before fanning to produce cool wind. The Urushi Fans are covered with beautiful Urushi lacquer (also known as japan) and enjoyed as fashionable accessories. Gifu Lacquered Fans remind us of good old days when young people came to the riverside with fans in their hands to enjoy the summer night breeze.
The fan production process requires a lot of hand works and Mr. Sumii at Sumii Tomijiro Store is the only artisan who can produce Gifu Lacquered Fans in the traditional process. Mr. Sumii says that continuous training of successors is needed to preserve this tradition of Gifu Lacquered Fans.
