Application for a police certificate

1. What is a police certificate?

Those who are going to settle down in a foreign country, or stay there for a long time, may be required to submit their Police Certificate document from Japan.

If they fail to submit such a Certificate, their entry in other countries may be rejected.

According to the request made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Police will issue a Police Certificate as a service to these people.

 

2.  Documents required for application

Resident in Japan

Japanese

 

 

 

 

1 Valid passport

2 An official extract copy of your family register (KOSEKI SHOHON) or an official copy of your family register (KOSEKI TOHON) issued within the last 6 months

3 An official copy of your Resident's card (JUMINHYO) issued within the last 6 months 

4 Any document indicating the necessity of this certificate

Non-Japanese

  • 1 Valid passport
  • 2 An official copy of your Alien Registration Card's Original Register Sheet (TOROKUGENPYO KISAIJIKOU SHOMEISYO) issued within the last 6 months
  • 3 Any document indicating the necessity of this certificate

Resident in Foreign National  

Japanese

  • 1 Valid passport
  • 2 An official extract copy of your family register (KOSEKI SHOHON) issued within the last 6 months
  • 3 An official copy of your Past Residential Record (JUMINHYO JOHYO) or your Family Resister (KOSEKI FUHYO) issued within the last 6 months
  • 4 Any document that verifies your present address (Driver's license issued in foreign country, etc.)
  • 5 Any document indicating the necessity of this certificate

Non-Japanese

  • 1 Valid passport
  • 2 An official copy of your Alien Registration Card's Original Register Sheet (HEISA TOROKUGENPYO KISAIJIKO SHOMEISYO) issued within the last 6 months that shows the fact that you used to be a resident of Gifu Prefecture
  • 3 Any document that verifies your present address (Driver's license issued in foreign country, etc.)
  • 4 Any document indicating the necessity of this certificate

 

3. Place of application (Point of contact)

   Identification Division, Criminal Investigation Department

   Gifu Prefectural Police Headquarters

   (Come to the reception desk on the 2nd floor)

    Office hours: Monday to Friday (Closed on National Holidays and Dec.29 to Jan.3)

   8:30 to 17:15

    It takes about 30 minutes for the application procedure.

 

4. Receipt of the certificate

  ○  The certificate will not be mailed to the applicant. You have to come to the same office to receive the certification. If you ask another person to receive the certification on your behalf, the person has to bring an entrustment letter from you.

  ○ It takes about 10 days to issue the certificate.

 

5. Service Fee

   Issuing the certification is free of charge.  

 

6. Notes

  ○ The certification document might not be issued due to:

  • a) The country which the Police Certificate is going to be submitted; and
  • b) The applicant's reason can not be validated for issuing the certificate.

      All applicants are strongly advised to contact the office in advance.

○  Applicants must apply in person. (Your fingerprints are required for the application.)

○ The application can not be accepted if the applicant does not bring all the necessary documents to the office on the application day.

○ If applicants are not in Japan, they may apply at the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in the country where they live. In this case, they will not be allowed to apply for the same certificate in Japan.
